The Japanese company Asahi was founded in 1950 and originally made tinplate toys under the name of ATC (Asahi Toy Company). The Model Pet range consisting of diecast models in about 1/43rd scale was introduced in 1959. These models reminded of contemporary products made by Dinky Toys and Corgi, but the range almost entirely consisted of Japanese cars. From the late 1970s onwards, several new and very detailed diecast models in 1/43rd (Rolls-Royce Camargue, Lotus Esprit) and 1/24th scale (Mercedes-Benz SSKL, Porsche 356 Speedster) were released.
