Herpa was founded in Nuremberg in 1949 and originally produced model railroad accessories and plastic toys. The company has been based in Dietenhofen, Bavaria, since 1965. In 1978 the first 1/87th scale model cars were introduced. In the following years the range was gradually extended, and Herpa became one of the main competitors of the well-established Wiking company in the field of 1/87th scale model vehicles. Herpa models have always been very accurate and well detailed. Herpa also released several models in 1/43rd scale: From 1989 to the mid-1990s, highly detailed plastic models of various Ferrari cars were manufactured in the "High Tech" range, and in 1993 Herpa also started producing 1/43rd scale diecast models, which were also used as promotional models by companies such as Mercedes-Benz and VW. Another series released in the mid-1990s, which featured inexpensive 1/66th scale diecast models, remained in production only for a short time. Furthermore, re-issues of early 1/87th scale Herpa models were made in Brazil from 1991 to 2000.
