Kato was founded in Tokyo in 1957 and has become the leading Japanese manufacturer of model railroads. The company is mainly known for high precision train models in H0 (1/87th) and N (1/160th) scale, but in the 1990s, Kato also produced several models of contemporary Japanese sports cars. The range consisted of the 1991 Nissan 300ZX and the 1993 Toyota Supra in 1/43rd scale as well as the same two cars and the 1994 Mitsubishi FTO in 1/87th scale. The models are very detailed and feature a plastic body and a diecast chassis. Doors and bonnet of the 1/43rd scale cars open, these models are thus made to a similar standard like the contemporary plastic models by Herpa, Revell and Faller.
