Lothar Rietze started production of 1/87th scale model cars in Nuremberg in 1983. His first model was a Mitsubishi L300 van, and many other Japanese cars could be found in the early Rietze range. Later the German company also produced contemporary Audi, Opel and Ford models, which were also used as promotional models by the manufacturers of the original cars. In 1990 Rietze introduced his first bus models in 1/87th scale; in the meantime the company has become the world's leading manufacturer model buses in this scale. However, Rietze has also released model cars in other scales, e.g. a Mercedes-Benz L319 van in 1/22.5th scale and several current Suzuki cars and Mercedes-Benz buses in 1/43th scale.
