Clé was a French manufacturer of plastic products. The company was founded by Clément Gaget in Oyonnax (Ain department) in 1952 and went out of business in 1986. The company name refers to the first letters of the founder’s first name, but also means "key" in French; hence, a key was chosen as the logo. Besides all kinds of household articles, Clé produced simple plastic toy cars in the 1950s and 1960s. In the beginning, mostly French contemporary cars in 1/48th and 1/64th scale were modelled, but in the 1960s, vintage cars from the early 20th century in 1/43rd scale (made from RAMI moulds), delivery vans in 1/48th and 1/64th scale, trucks in 1/90th scale and racing cars in 1/32nd scale were added to the range. The models were often distributed by other companies as promotional items or gifts for their customers, notably by Procter & Gamble for Bonux detergent and by Unipol for Huilor cooking oil. These brand names sometimes also appear on the models. Furthermore, in addition to the French-made models, there are also Clé models produced in Algeria from the existing moulds but in a softer plastic.
