The first Corgi models were released in 1956. They were made by Mettoy, a manufacturer of tinplate and diecast toys founded in 1933 by the German immigrant Philipp Ullmann and based in Northampton, later in Swansea (Wales). The Corgi models were made of diecast in about 1/43rd scale and were soon featuring many functional parts such as opening doors and bonnets or suspension. Models of vehicles known from movies and television series were a particular success. An additional range of smaller models in about 1/66th scale was introduced in 1964. It was first called "Husky" and then renamed to "Corgi Juniors" in 1970. In the 1970s a lot of models in the main range were made in 1/36th scale, but in the following decade Corgi again used 1/43rd scale for model cars (and 1/50th scale for commercial vehicles) and moved production to China. A large quantity of scale model cars for collectors have been produced in the "Classics" range since then. Furthermore, Corgi took over its competitor Lledo in 1999 and continued production of the Vanguards range of 1/43rd scale models.
