Das Automobil was the name of a large model car shop in Munich. In the 1980s and early 1990s, the company commissioned English manufacturers of handbuilt models to produce detailed 1/43rd scale white metal models and marketed them under its own name. A 1959 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider, a 1958 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster and a 1960s Mercedes-Benz 230/250/280 SL were made by SMTS, while Western Models produced a 1953 Chevrolet Corvette for the Munich shop. The models were available as finished models but were also sold in kit form.
