Märklin from Germany started production of tin toys in 1859 and became one of the leading manufacturers of model trains in the 20th century. But the company also produced model cars: Construction kits of big tinplate cars were released before World War II, and in 1935 diecast models in 1/45th scale were introduced, matching the 0-gauge model railway. The 8000 series introduced after the war consisted of model cars in 1/45th scale and model trucks in slightly smaller scales. Detailed 1/43rd scale models with many movable parts and fast-rolling wheels were released in the 1800 series between 1968 and 1975. Märklin also made simple 1/87th scale models serving as model train accessories, and detailed diecast models of vintage cars in the same scale were also added to the range. Since the mid-1980s there have been several re-editions of classic Märklin tinplate and diecast models.
