The German company Märklin started production of tin toys in 1859 and became one of the leading manufacturers of model trains in the 20th century. However, Märklin also produced model cars: Construction kits of big tinplate cars were released before World War II, and in 1935 diecast models in 1/45th scale were introduced, matching the 0-gauge model railway. The 8000 series introduced after the war consisted of model cars in 1/45th scale and model trucks in slightly smaller scales. Detailed 1/43rd scale models with many movable parts and fast-rolling wheels were released in the 1800 series between 1968 and 1975. Simple 1/87th scale models serving as model train accessories were also available, and from 1988 onwards, Cursor produced for Märklin a range of detailed diecast models of vintage trucks, buses, fire engines, and tractors in the same scale. Since the mid-1980s there have been several re-editions of classic Märklin tinplate and diecast models.
