In the mid-1980s, the Hungarian manufacturer Metchy started producing copies of small-scale diecast models originally made by Matchbox from England and Siku from Germany. These models were sold in particular Metchy boxes and were often available in other colours than their Western European counterparts. In the mid-1990s Metchy modelled two cars used by the MOL Rally Team in the Hungarian rally championship, both in 1/57th scale. Whereas the 1996 Ford Escort RS Cosworth was based on a Matchbox model, the 1997 Subaru Impreza was made from a casting developed by Metchy on their own.
