Vitesse was founded by Francisco Abrunhosa and Bernard Peres as a brand of the Portuguese company Cinerius in 1982 and produced a wide range of current and classic diecast model cars in 1/43rd scale until its collapse in 2001. A few model cars in 1/18th scale and trucks in 1/50th scale were also released. Besides Vitesse, the brand names Onyx (contemporary racing cars), Quartzo (historic racing cars and NASCAR models), City (commercial vehicles) and Skid (rally cars) were also used by the Vitesse group. Furthermore, Vitesse produced models for other companies, such as the Rextoys range for the Swiss model train manufacturer Fulgurex, and the Macadam models for the Hapax company in Geneva. Production of Vitesse models was moved to China in the mid-1990s, and after 2001 several Chinese companies continued to produce modelcars designed by Vitesse. One of them, Sun Star, introduced a new range of models marketed under the name of "Vitesse" in 2003.
