With the aid of the French development organisation SEL, Bezalila was founded in Madagascar in 1994 as a co-operative to unite disparate workshops which were working with local handicrafts. Now independent from SEL, the workshops provide fair-trade employment to formerly impoverished artisans in crafts such as weaving, woodwork, and modelling recycled tin cans. Bezalila notably offers a range of Citroën 2 CV cars and other vehicles made of old drink cans, which are available in different sizes and sometimes feature opening parts.
