Richard Sieper founded a casting firm in Lüdenscheid in 1921. He originally made aluminium products, but then specialized in plastic materials in the 1930s. In 1950 the company registered the brand name Siku, for Sieper Kunststoffe (=plastics), and in the following years, the first plastic model vehicles were released - in rather large scales and with many operating features. The first Siku plastic modelcars in 1/60th scale were introduced in 1954, along with a series of figurines and buildings, in 1963 Siku began production of diecast metal models, and in 1972 the scale of the models was changed from 1/60th to 1/55th. In addition to the "Siku Super" series consisting of cars and commercial vehicles in about 1/55th scale many new ranges have been introduced since the 1980s, e.g. agricultural vehicles in 1/32nd scale or various vehicles in 1/87th scale or even smaller. In 1992, Siku also released two 1/43rd scale model cars, a VW Beetle Cabriolet and a Mercedes-Benz 500 SEL. After the year 2000, more and more 1/50th scale models were introduced, and the production was partly moved to China.
