Mebetoys was founded by Mario Besana in Milan in 1966. The company manufactured hundreds of different models, first in 1/43rd scale, later also in 1/25th scale. In the beginning of the 1970s already Besana sold his firm to the American toy company Mattel. He would found two new companies soon afterwards: first Martoys, then Bburago. From now on, the Mebetoys models, which were originally very detailed, became more simple, for instance accurate hubs and rubber tyres were replaced by cheap plastic wheels. Mattel used its own Hot Wheels label for all Mebetoys models from 1981 on and closed down the Italian model car factory in 1984.
