Cheap plastic model cars in 1/41st scale were marketed under the name of Politoys since 1960. In 1965 Politoys also introduced a range of detailed diecast models in 1/43rd scale. The Milan-based manufacturer changed its name to Polistil in the early 1970s, in order to avoid confusion with Palitoys, an English company. At the same time, Polistil started concentrating its activity on larger scales, although models in 1/43rd and also 1/66th (in the "Penny" series) and later 1/55th scale remained in production: Numerous 1/25th scale models were made from 1973, and a series of models in 1/16th and 1/18th scale was released three years later. In the late 1980s, Polistil was purchased by the American toy group Tonka, who stopped production and dropped the brand name in 1993. Maisto acquired the Polistil brand, along with Bburago, in 2005 and later revived it for a new range of inexpensive Chinese-made diecast models and radio-controlled cars.
