The Italian company APS was founded by Eugenio Agrati and Ennio Sala in 1955. In 1960, it started manufacturing cheap plastic model cars in 1/41st scale under the name of Politoys. Five years later, Politoys also released a range of detailed diecast models in 1/43rd scale, and slot cars were introduced under the Policar name in 1963. The company had its headquarters in Milan, with production centered in Chiari, near Brescia. The manufacturer changed the brand name of all its products to Polistil in 1974, in order to avoid confusion with Palitoys, an English company. At the same time, Polistil started concentrating its activity on larger scales, although models in 1/43rd and also 1/66th (in the "Penny" series) and later 1/55th scale remained in production: Numerous 1/25th scale models were made from 1973, and a series of models in 1/16th and 1/18th scale was released three years later. The last Italian-made Polistil models appeared in 1993. In the 1970s, model cars from Politoys castings were also manufactured by McGregor in Mexico, and there were numerous Politoys copies made by Eastern European manufacturers such as Estetyka, KDN, Mehanotehnika Izola, Vatutin and Leningrad.
