Modela was established in Latvia in 1994 as a scale model laboratory. In the following years, the company made 1/25th scale plastic model kit mastermodels and master molds for American companies such as AMT, Lindberg, Monogram and Testors. In 2000, Modela started production of their own ranges of 1/43rd scale resin model cars and 1/87th scale models of cargo railway cars from the former USSR. The first 1/43rd scale model car was a Zuk fire engine from Poland. Besides a Ford AA fire engine as used in Riga in the 1930s, the model car range in this scale notably included resin models of the Latvian-built OSCar rally cars in various versions. The OSCar O3 from the 2007 Paris-Dakar rally has also been released as a 1/18th scale model. From 2009 onwards, the company focused on model trains.
