Tanzania

Like in other African countries, artisans in Tanzania make tin cars from recycled tin containers. There is a notably a group in Chalinze and two groups of craftsmen from the Chagga people in the Kilimanjaro region. The craftsmen in Chalinze have specialised in making Land Rover models with an opening Safari rooftop. These cars are painted and individually decorated with local countryside and animal motives as well as with place names or Swahili words. The Chagga craftsmen manufacture various types of cars, mostly painted in realistic colours and featuring opening parts. The models are often sold as souvenirs for tourists in Tanzania and in neighbouring country Kenya.
