In the 1980s, the British company Matchbox bought the rights the use the name of the well-established diecast model manufacturer Dinky Toys, who had closed down in 1981. The first models of the "Dinky Collection" by Matchbox were released in 1988: diecast models of cars from the 1940s to the 1970s. The models were designed in England, but originally manufactured in Macau and later in China, and they were all made in 1/43rd scale, with the exception of the limited edition 1/50th scale Mercedes-Benz bus model. The original range was produced until 1993 and consisted of 32 models in various liveries, but later Matchbox regularly re-issued some of these models in new limited edition series.
