Funmate was a Japanese manufacturer of plastic toys. In the field of model cars, the company is best known for its "Go Cars" series from 1971 and 1972. The series consisted of contemporary cars by the Ford Motor Company in about 1/40th scale: Ford Torino in two different body styles, Ford Mustang Mach 1, Ford Maverick, Ford Thunderbird, Mercury Cougar, Mercury Montego. The models were attached to packages of Procter & Gamble detergents in the USA and were available in various colours. Early models came with a starting mechanism in form of a handle with a metal rod that slips into a hole in the back of the car and compresses a spring. For safety reasons, this mechanism was later replaced by a launching pad that the car rests on top of. Funmate also released other car models with the same starting mechanism, notably a Formula 1 racing car and a 1973 Oldsmobile Omega. Friction-powered cars and various trucks were also part of the range from the 1960s to the 1980s. More recently, Funmate focused on toys for young children and infants such as rattles, mobiles, dolls, and musical boxes.
