Johnny Lightning was the name of a toy car range introduced by the American Topper Toys company in 1969 in order to compete with the Hot Wheels range by Mattel. The company soon sponsored several racing cars of the Parnelli Jones team in the Indianapolis 500-Mile races. However, production already stopped two years later when Topper Toys went bankrupt. In 1994 Tom Lowe from the Playing Mantis company presented some reeditions of the old Johnny Lightning models, but soon he released newly developed models in 1:64 scale under this brand name. Most Johnny Lightning models are well detailed, and the range includes famous movie cars, muscle cars, hot rods and many other model cars. In addition to the wide range of 1/64th scale cars, Johnny Lightning also released models in 1/18th, 1/24th and 1/43rd scale. Playing Mantis was taken over by RC2 in 2005 and thus now belonged to the same company as Ertl and Racing Champions. In 2011, the Japanese toy company Tomy acquired the brand and ceased production two years later, but from 2016 onwards, the new owner Round 2, which also produces the Auto World models, released new Johnny Lighning models again.
