The Dutch company Lion Toys was established in 1946 to make model train parts and started producing diecast model cars in 1956. The first models were made in about 1/50th scale, amongst them were several Opels, Renaults and a VW Beetle. From the 1960s onwards, Lion Toys almost solely modelled DAF vehicles: cars in 1/43rd scale and trucks in 1/50th scale. A 1/43rd scale Commer Walkthru van was also available in various liveries. In the 1970s, company specialized into 1/50th scale trucks and bus models. In addition to the DAF trucks, Scania, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo and MAN trucks were introduced in the 1990s, and in 2000, the company reissued some of the 1960s DAF car models. In 2010, Lion Toys was taken over by Tekno, another Dutch manufacturer of model trucks.
