Rio, based in Cernobbio, Northern Italy, was founded by Reno, Nilo and Diego Tattarletti in 1962. The Rio models, made of diecast in 1/43rd scale with many plastic parts, were some of the first model cars which were deliberately not designed as toys, but as collectors' items. Most original cars modelled by Rio are classic cars made before World War II, but since the mid-1980s postwar cars were also added to the range. The models remained in production without any changes for many years. In 2004 Rio was taken over by M4, the company manufacturing the Art Model and Best models. Improved re-editions and variations of the existing models were introduced in the following years. Small dioramas including Rio models are also released regularly.
