Tomy, a Japanese toy company founded in 1923 by Eiichiro Tomiyama, started production of the Tomica diecast models in about 1/60th scale in 1970. In the beginning there were two different Tomica ranges, one consisting of Japanese and one consisting of foreign cars. Both ranges were merged in 1988, from 1993 on production was moved to China, and in 2009 the first Tomica models made in Vietnam were released. The "Tomica Limited" series with better detailed 1/64th scale models for the collectors’ marked was introduced in 2001. From 1972 to 1994 Tomy also produced the "Tomica Dandy" series of model cars in about 1/43rd scale. In 2006, Tomy merged with Takara, another Japanese toy manufacturer and long-time rival; as a result of the merger, the newly established Takara Tomy company now owns the Tomica brand.
