The Danhausen Company in Aachen, Germany, originally a dealer for motorbikes, bicycles and toys, started producing its own ranges of handbuilt model cars under the names of Metal 43, Plumbies, SD Models and Minichamps in 1974. The mass production of very well detailed diecast model cars, marketed under the Minichamps name as well, started in China in 1990. This range, in the beginning mainly consisting of racing car models in 1/43rd scale, now includes a huge variety of vehicles in several different scales. The first 1/64th scale models were marketed under the name of Microchamps in the mid-1990s, but this name was dropped after a few years already. Minichamps models are developed in Germany, but the moulds are built in the Far East and the models are also assembled there. Within less than ten years, Minichamps became one of the most successful model manufacturers; until 1999, the company had already produced 10 million model cars. In 2004, the first resin miniatures were introduced in addition to the diecast models. The Maxichamps range featuring inexpensive reissues of older Minichamps models was introduced in 2016.
